40 by 40 and The 39th Year List

Today is my 39th birthday. I remember when I was a teenager how old I thought 39 was. Is it old now? I guess I don’t really feel old. I may look older than 39 with all of my gray hair, but I can’t honestly say I feel old.

My friend, Elle, over at the bucket-list blog Veni Vidi Veci has inspired me to write a bucket list. Mine will be different than most lists. Most people write bucket lists with things they want to accomplish in their lifetimes. Mine will be more a set of things I wish to accomplish before my 40th birthday next year.

So here it goes-
  1. I want to lose 40 pounds. It is really sad that even if I do this, I still will be technically considered over-weight. That doesn’t really matter, it would be quite an accomplishment.
  2. I want to move my blog from this free site at Blogger over to a hosted site using WordPress. I also want to mold the site into more than just a blog, incorporating some travel guide elements to it as well.
  3. I want to push my number of National Parks visited to over 300. I’m at 285 right now, so this should be do-able.
  4. I want to visit at least one new country. This trip is in the works right now, more on that later.
  5. I want to do one thing that scares me- skydiving or bungy-jumping are the most likely possibilities.
  6. I want to run 5 more 5Ks- and I would like to run one in under 30 minutes. That would require me to cut over 3 minutes off my best time, but if I lose some weight, this should be possible.
  7. I would like to rescue another dog. We have two already, I think we can handle 3, as we have done before.
  8. I want to get moved out of our current house and into a new house closer to our parents. This one’s a little more out of my control- we’ve been trying, but right now the housing market isn’t cooperating.
  9. I would love to start a Detroit-area tweet-up group for travelers. This may be hard since so far, I seem to be the only travel blogger in the whole area. If anyone knows someone who might enjoy this, please let me know.
  10. I am going to take my wife on a nice (short) getaway sometime. Where and when will depend on the previously mentioned house issue.
  11. I am going to try and finish listening to the audiobooks for the five George R.R. Martin books released so far in “The Song of Fire and Ice” series that the HBO series “Game of Thrones” is based on. The books average 40 hours or more of listening time a piece, so this will take some work.
  12. I would like to meet many of my twitter peeps in person. This is something that will take some creative scheduling/traveling.
I acknowledge that I haven’t really stepped out on many of these. I’m too practical to set goals for myself that are so outlandish that I know I can’t accomplish them. I also don’t want to be too vague on these- I could always put “Be a better person”, but I should be striving toward that even if it’s not on my list. I am open-minded, so any suggestions on things to add to the list is fine with me!

  1. Great list Erik! I think you're going to love WordPress, but now that that's out of the way…ummm…40 pounds? Does this mean no more beer????

Happy birthday and thanks for the shout out.

  2. This is a terrific list. You'll be very happy at WordPress. I built my own CMS years ago (still using it today). Not sure I'd do that all over again, but it works for me. Very achievable goals. Happy birthday and good luck!
