Cruising the Canals in Amsterdam

I’ve heard lots of opinions on the experience of a canal cruise in Amsterdam. One line of thinking is that it is an entirely touristy experience, unless you find one of the ‘alternative’ options. I’ve heard other say their experience gave them a perspective on the city (and it’s ties to water) that walking around it never would. I’ve heard others say that you never will truly understand Amsterdam unless you’ve been on the water. I think all of these are true in their own way.

I’ve been on the canals of Amsterdam six times, each in a different format. I’ll agree that it’s an important part of understanding not only Amsterdam, but the Netherlands as a whole. This trip was the first time I cruised with one of the many options offered along Damrak (the city’s main tourist drag, and probably the one most accessible for those doing a day trip on a stop over). It certainly wasn’t my favorite experience of the bunch, but it was affordable and a good option for those without time to make reservations or on a quick stopover.
