My Travel Biography
My parents fostered a love of travel in me at an early age. We took long summer trips each summer, both to the East Coast and Out West. During the summer of 1987, the summer between my Freshman and Sophomore years of high school, my parents took my brother, sister and I to Europe for a 5 week vacation. I have described the two parts of this trip in these posts (part one &part two). Nine years later, during the summer of 1996, we traveled internationally again as a family, this time on a cruise to Southeast Asia. This trip kicked of a period of traveling that still hasn’t ended yet. The following summer I spent a week in London & Wales before taking a three week bus tour around Western Europe with a company called Contiki. The following summer I went back to Europe, first spending three amazing days in Iceland on my own, then a week in London and Amsterdam with friend, before once again joining a Contiki bus tour, this time a 16 day adventure in Eastern Europe. After the bus tour, I met my friends Tone & Stan in London and we spent the next three weeks riding the rails around Western Europe. I returned that November, this time with another friend from work to visit Paris, Brussles and Amsterdam. In February of 1999, my parents and I spent three weeks independently touring Spain & Portugal, with a day trip to Morocco.
In October of 2001, I made my longest international journey to date, spending 48 glorious days traveling around Australia. I made it to all seven Australian states and territories, and consider it the best trip I have ever taken.
During a trip to Amsterdam in 2003, I hatched an idea to try and visit all the National Park Units in the lower 48 states on a series of long driving trips. The first one, in May of 2003, took in the parks of the the Southwest. Fourteen more trips have followed. As it stands right now, I am through 278 of the 340 parks on my list.
In May of 2010, I returned to overseas traveling, with a 25 day solo trip to Israel, with side trips to Petra in Jordan, and Mount Sinai in Egypt. It was another incredible experience, and it helped convince me to slow down on my National Parks quest and make a more concerted effort to get overseas at least every other year.
