The cruise I did on Lake Taupo aboard the Yacht Barbary was one of the most enjoyable experiences during my entire New Zealand trip. We had a beautiful day with clear blue skies. The friendly captain, Jamie, made the trip exceptional with his knowledge of the lake and the local Maori legends that surround New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake. For most of the cruise, the passengers were able to lounge comfortably on beanbags and take in the serine atmosphere. The highlight of the cruise for me, along with the relaxing atmosphere (something I’d done precious little of so far on the trip) was the visit to the Maori cliff carvings in a sheltered bay along the lake’s northwest side.
There a quite a number of options for boat excursions on Lake Taupo, but I can’t imagine doing the trip anyway other than this. For cruise information, please visit the Sail Barbary website.
